The Museo Egizio was founded in 1824, when King Carlo Felice bought the Drovetti collection, and opened to the public by 1832. As the Museum describes itself, it is «the oldest museum in the world dedicated entirely to Egyptian culture». Today it preserves about 40,000 objects: about 3,300 are on display in the rooms and about 12,000 in the Gallerie della Cultura Materiale.

The itinerary follows the chronology. Here you will find the order of the floors, the new rooms and the closed ones, so you know what to expect before entering. The full history is on the Museum's page dedicated to its history.

The answer in brief

The chronological route starts from the predynastic era on the second floor, continues on the first floor, goes up to the third floor with the Galleria della Scrittura and ends on the ground floor with «Materia. Forma del tempo», the rock chapel of Ellesiya and the Galleria dei Re. The funerary goods of Kha and Merit are in room 7. Since 12 December 2025, the Sale Storiche on floor -1 have been closed.

What is inside the Museo Egizio?

Around 40,000 objects: statues, coffins, funerary goods, vases, wooden and stone items, across 12,000 square metres of exhibition space and 4 floors.

Most of the collection comes from the excavations of Ernesto Schiaparelli and later Giulio Farina, between 1903 and 1937: around 30,000 objects brought to Turin. The Mensa Isiaca was already in the city around 1630, almost two centuries before the Museum.

The Gallerie della Cultura Materiale display the objects in cases arranged by material, such as stone, wood, terracotta and metal, or by type: in cabinets 17-18 there are the canopic jars, in 19-22 the ushabti. They are described on the Galleries page.

How is the route organised, floor by floor?

Start on the second floor, then first, third, and ground floor: this is the chronological order indicated by the Museum.

The ticket shop warns that, due to works, the route is less linear than usual: the entire Museum is open, including new galleries, but the cloakroom is suspended. All floors are accessible by lift.

What must you absolutely see at the Museo Egizio?

If you have little time, aim for five stops: the tomb of Kha and Merit, the large statues, the chapel of Ellesiya, «Materia. Forma del tempo» and the Galleria della Scrittura.

  • The tomb of Kha and Merit, room 7. The room was re-installed and inaugurated by the Museum on 4 December 2025. Until February 2027 there is the pyramidion with Kha's name, on loan from the Louvre, as announced by the Museum. On 15 February 2026 it was 120 years since the discovery of the tomb.
  • The large statues. Among those collected by Donati between 1759 and 1762 in the temple of Mut at Karnak are the Ramses II in pink granite, the seated goddess Sekhmet and the Isis of Coptos.
  • The rock-cut chapel of Ellesiya, a gift from Egypt for Italy's help in saving the Nubian temples from the waters of the Aswan dam. Cut into 66 blocks, it was inaugurated in Turin on 4 September 1970.
  • «Materia. Forma del tempo», since 5 October 2024: about 700 square metres between the ground floor and the underground level, almost 5,000 vases displayed like in a library and two «libraries» of woods and pigments, 40 varieties each.
  • The Galleria della Scrittura, on the third floor.

Which rooms are closed in 2026?

The Sale Storiche on floor -1, closed since 12 December 2025. The rest of the Museum is open.

The Museum communicated this with a notice: the rooms will remain «temporarily closed to the public», without a reopening date. Work on Piazza Egizia also continues; the Museum describes itself as «a museum under construction, but always open».

One work has come and gone home: the Book of the Dead of Merit, on loan from the Bibliothèque nationale de France, was on display until August 2026. Now there is a tactile reproduction of it.

What is new to see?

On 20 November 2026, as announced by the Museum, an immersive room opens in the underground level, a journey through the landscapes of the Nile. In 2025, the tomb of Kha and Merit, the tomb of Iti and Neferu, and the spaces of Princess Ahmose were rearranged.

For the immersive room the Museum has also announced a programme of guided tours; price and access methods are not yet published. On the first floor, since 2019, «Alla ricerca della vita» tells the story of life, funeral rites and mummification, with human remains in conservation cases. The Museum points out these rooms on its maps.

The news with their dates is in the article on the 2026 news.
