The guide

The Museo Egizio, explained

The Museo Egizio was founded in 1824, when King Carlo Felice bought Bernardino Drovetti's collection. In 1832 it was already open to the public, in the same building where it is today.

A 17th-century building

The headquarters is the "Collegio dei Nobili", built to a design by Michelangelo Garove from 1679 and still shared today with the Accademia delle Scienze. Between 1903 and 1937, the excavations of Ernesto Schiaparelli and then Giulio Farina in Egypt brought around 30,000 objects to Turin. In 2006, for the Winter Olympics, set designer Dante Ferretti redesigned the statuary; in 2015 the Museum reopened after a complete renovation. Today the collection has around 40,000 objects on 12,000 square metres of exhibition space.

Rooms not to be missed

On the ground floor the Galleria dei Re houses the large statues, and next to it is the rock-cut chapel of Ellesiya, donated by Egypt to Italy for its help in saving the Nubian temples: cut into 66 blocks, it was inaugurated in Turin on 4 September 1970. In room 7 there is the funerary goods of Kha and Merit, re-installed on 4 December 2025. "Materia. Forma del tempo", since 2024, tells the story of woods, pigments, almost 5,000 vases and stone objects. The full itinerary is in the guide to what to see.

The thing to know: the Museum's ticket is bought online only, for a precise time, and is non-refundable. The Sale Storiche on floor -1 have been closed since 12 December 2025. Every tour page says what is included and until when you can cancel for free.

What's new

On 20 November 2026 the Museum will open a new immersive room in the underground level, a journey through the landscapes of the Nile. The pyramidion with Kha's name, on loan from the Louvre, remains on display until February 2027. In 2025 the Museum exceeded 1.2 million entries. All the news in the article on the new Museo Egizio.

Visiting it with a guide

The Museum organises visits with its Egyptologists, in Italian online and in other languages by phone or email. On GetYourGuide, the guided tours by tour operators include the ticket and can be cancelled for free. The comparison is in the guide to guided tours.
